Windows 10, PMP Build 4666

1. Browse to IPTC | Keywords | <none>
2. Open Structured Keywords panel and apply a path to some selected photos
3. Double-click <none> to refresh
4. Photos with newly assigned keywords remain visible.

This does not happen all the time but once it starts happening the only way to fix it is to remove all photos and re-catalog them.  This problem seems to occur after closing and restarting PMP.

Additionally, I cannot remove some photos and have to go to the Folder Tree and remove all photos from there.

MORE INFO:

After the catalog gets into this state I cannot remove ANY photos.  Seems like the catalog is getting corrupted somehow.  I have a little over 3000 photos in my catalog.

Hi Keith,

After the catalog gets into this state I cannot remove ANY photos.  Seems like the catalog is getting corrupted somehow.  I have a little over 3000 photos in my catalog.

Does this behavior persist even after quitting and restarting Photo Mechanic?

It may be helpful to see your Photo Mechanic log. In Photo Mechanic go to the Help menu and choose "Reveal Support Data…" and moments later a Windows Explorer window will come forward with the zipped log file selected.  Use the 'Attachments and other options' link when you're composing your reply to this message and there you'll be able to upload your zipped PM log file.

Thanks,

Bill

Hi Bill,

yes, this happens even after restarting PMP too.  I have since deleted the old catalog and created a new one with the exact same photos and will continue to test.  The old database has been through a few upgrades so this could have caused the issue.

Attached is the log.  Not sure how far back the log goes.

I will keep you informed.

Cheers
Keith

1. In a newly created catalog I opened Browse | IPTC | Keywords | <none> and added a keyword path to two photos using the Structured Keywords Panel.
2. Double-clicked <none> to refresh the windows and the two photos remained even though they now had keywords assigned.
3. Tried to remove these photos from the catalog and I could not.

Re-scanning the folder fixes the problem for a while.

New log attached.

Note: The photos and catalog are located on an external SSD drive connected via USB-C.  I have never had any issues with this configuration but thought it may be relevant.

Thanks for posting the PM logs. Unfortunately the errors displayed therein are somewhat downstream from where the problem must be occurring.

So far, I'm unable to reproduce this issue locally by attempting to follow the same steps.

I'd really like to fix this, hopefully in time for this week's PM Plus build.

Keith, could you try again with the "CATALOG_DEBUG_LOGGING" flag enabled?

I'll paste Kirk's explanation here for turning it on:

Quote
I'd like for you to turn on Catalog debug logging.  In Photo Mechanic's preferences folder you'll create a text file named PMDebug.txt and enter the following text:

CATALOG_DEBUG_LOGGING ON

The location of the preferences folder is:

C:\Users\<your username>\AppData\Roaming\Camera Bits, Inc\Photo Mechanic\

Then quit and start Photo Mechanic again.  Then try and upload some files.  When the error occurs, stop uploading, and choose the "Reveal Support Data..." command on the Help menu.  A Windows Explorer window will come forward with a zip compressed copy of the PM.log file.  Please reply to this message.  Use the 'Attachments and other options' link when you're composing your reply to this message and there you'll be able to upload your zipped log file.

Thanks,

Bill

Hi Bill,

I put the  PMDebug.txt file in folder:

C:\Users\<your username>\AppData\Roaming\Camera Bits, Inc\Photo Mechanic Plus\ as I assumed this is the folder PMP would use.

Also, I have also turned off "Generate preview & thumbnail proxy images for offline or remote use" for my catalog which may be what is different for my setup.

here is the new PM_log.zip as requested.  Hope it helps

Cheers

Unfortunately that did not enable the logging.  It really needs to go into the path that Bill specified earlier.  Not the "Photo Mechanic Plus" one.

Could you please try again?

Thanks,

Hi Kirk,

OK, done the test again and log attached.

Turning on proxies did not make any difference.

I re-added the folder to the catalog which fixes the issue but then after a restart of PMP the problems occur. So, it is after a restart that is when things go wrong.

Cheers

Keith,

That's better.  But now that you have the logging on, can you start over and get the problem to happen again, please?

Thanks,

-Kirk

Hi Kirk,

that is what I did with that new log file.  After turning on logging I started PMP, added keywords to photos, refreshed the Browse window, tried removing photos from the catalog, refreshed again then generated the log file from the Help menu as requested.  That is the log I posted.

Do you want me to do this again?

Cheers
Keith

I think the 'damage' had already been done prior to getting the logging done.  So let's start over.

Delete the current catalog.  Quit PMP.  Start PMP.  Build a new catalog.  Then do the fewest number of operations that begins to reproduce the problem.

Then get the log and post it here.  We're hoping to see the first point where things start to go wrong.

Thanks,

-Kirk

OK, done as requested with steps performed below:

1. Deleted catalog.
2. Closed PMP and deleted old log file and checked the directory where the old catalog was and found it empty.
3. Turned on logging
4. Started PMP and created a new catalog in the same location as before.  Did not create proxies.
5. Opened Browse and navigated to IPTC | Keywords | <none>
6. Checked two photos had no keywords
7. Added keyword paths to these two photos using the Structured Keyword Panel
8. Clicked <none> to refresh Browse and the two photos disappeared.
9. Closed and restarted PMP and navigated to <none> again under keywords
10. Found two photos with no keywords and added keyword path in the same way as before.
11. Clicked <none> to refresh and the photos remained in the Browse window.
12. Checked that the photos had keywords and they did.
13. Tried to remove these two photos from the catalog and they remained and would not go.
14. Generated log file

Hope this helps  :)

Keith,

Could you download, install and use this build and run your entire test again?  We've added additional logging.
