Kindergarten Question #1 - Getting Started
« on: November 23, 2020, 05:53:33 PM »
I have purchased Photo Mechanic Plus, but until a few minutes ago, I was completely lost.

I have all the photos I currently want to keep track of in this folder on my iMac:  pictures/_photolab_  and beneath that I have folders, sub-folders, sub-sub folders, and so on.

When I go into PhotoMechanic, at the top left is what I think are icons for the NAVIGATOR (on left) and ORGANIZER (to the right).

I tried to set up a new catalog for the top level folder /pictures/_photolab_/
I have my own organized system for placing my files under that starting point.

NAVIGATOR

I created a "Favorite" labeled _PhotoLab_.  Underneath that, I see my folder organization.

Moving down a bit more, I see Navigator", which seems to be a list of all my folders on my iMac.
When I click on any of those folders, I see thumbnails at the right seemingly for every photo in, or below, that folder.
Navigator seems to be a listing of every folder on my iMac, with drop-down arrows to see what is inside of folders.

Before I go any further, is what I've written so far correct?  Navigator shows me all the folders on my iMac, and ALL the photos in that folder, or in sub-folders underneath it.

I assume this as nothing to do with catalogs yet - it's just allowing me to quickly view all the images on my computer.
Clicking on any of the folders under "favorites" doesn't bring up thumbnails.
Thumbnails only show up with I click on a folder displayed under "Navigator".

Yes???  If so, I'll ask my next question.

Being a 3 day (!) user, I had the same queries albeit on Windows. What I believe you are seeing is the existing folder structure.  I had to create a catalogue by going to "catalog" and then "scan to catalog".  Menus on the Mac may be different but probably quite similar. It took just over 24 hrs to catalogue 309,000 images into a large number of files.

Mike,

The ReadMe that came with the installer disk image has a quick start guide near the end (after the release notes) that should get you started.

Kirk, at the time I was just trying to install it.  Can I download that file from the website?  Will the title be "Read me"?
Sorry, the only file I paid attention to was the program itself.
Gee, I can't find it under the HELP tab, but I did find the Online Manual.

I guess I can download the program a second time, and this time save the getting started document.
