Editing/creating structured keyword lists software
« on: December 05, 2020, 02:23:39 PM »
Is there a program for creating structured keyword lists, that makes the indenting/formatting complex lists easier.

I've found this, https://www.photo-keywords.com/tab-list-tools.php but it appears to be Windows only (I'm on a Mac) and I haven't studied it well enough to know if it would work with PM structured lists.

I can obviously just use any text editor, but thought there might be something a bit easier to get the formatting correct, especially as I already have flat lists that need adapted into structured lists.

Thanks,

Graham

Why not simply use PM's Structured Keywords Panel?  It is really easy to add keywords, synonyms and categories, particularly now that these are separately colour coded and in different fonts.  You cannot drag and drop, but you can cut and paste to a different location as a child or sibling.

If you do not want to do that, you can use a spreadsheet, such as Excel, and save your list in tab delimited format.  If you need to see how this works, simply import an exported keyword list into Excel.  Maybe it is easier in Excel if you are making wholesale, major moves of keywords between higher level categories, but for myself I find the Structured Keywords Panel more than good enough.  No need, in my view, for yet another specialist application.

Hope that helps.

Thanks, I've used all these tools, including "smart" text editors like textmate to do this in the past when I've been working with a few hundred keywords, but I was hoping to find a more efficient tool before I started a task involving structuring several thousand words.  Having said that I've only ever used the structured keywords panel for simple editing, so maybe I should look at that again.

If no suggestions for such a tool is forthcoming, I will fall back on probably a spreadsheet as I am comfortable in using one for data manipulation, but I wanted to ask about alternatives before making a start.

If you do decide to use a spreadsheet, be careful with the text encoding.  It needs to be UTF-8 Unicode or extended (accented/non-english) characters won't work when you import the file into PM.

Thanks, but I'm all too familiar with the problem, even if I keep forgetting about it until it rears its head again :-)

Cheers,
