Working with offline images
« on: December 06, 2020, 06:28:32 PM »
Is there any way to work with images while they’re offline and have the meta data sync once drive(s) are connected? Tag, color and/star rate, collections, etc...? Also can you access the preview images with a show on finder command or other method? Would be nice to be able to use the preview image for approval, email, social media, etc. without having to have the original images on hand. Ideally one could use the existing edit commands?

Thanks,
Mark

No, offline editing is not supported at this time.

No, there is no facility for getting at the preview in the proxy cache at this time.

Both of the above are features that we want to support in the future.

The proxy images do not have the metadata that the originals had.  How useful would it be to use those images if they don't contain metadata?  If you were to edit it and change it, should Photo Mechanic Plus disregard it since it no longer matches the visual representation of the original image? What if you made a mistake and modified the directory structure, or deleted images?  Then there would be potential support issues for us to diagnose.

I could see making a copy at a chosen destination and then you could do whatever you want with it, but it wouldn't be straight out of the proxy cache.  It would also be possible then to write the metadata to the image which would make it more useful.  Though, any metadata that referred to the original file type could be incorrect: the proxy would be a JPEG, but the original could be a RAW file, for instance.
