PM 6+ not seeing Capture One XMP Metadata
« on: December 07, 2020, 06:00:07 PM »
Prior to purchasing Photo Mechanic 6 Plus, I'd been using I've been using Capture One (on a Mac) as my DAM, and to add/edit IPTC, color/star ratings, keywords, etc. I have several shoots that I Imported, and star rated in Capture One, and now want to add Keywords in PM.

However, PM sees my images, but doesn't see the ratings assigned to the images, even after doing a Refresh & Rescan in Photo Mechanic. I'm using xmp files to sync metadata between my RAW (Fuji RAF) and JPEGs in Capture One. I've done a Full XMP Sync in Capture One, and then opened the XMP files to ensure that the rating is there. If I Keyword one of the images in PM, it instantly shows in Capture One as expected, however, it overwrites the existing star rating.

Do I need to Ingest the images into PM? (I don't think so, but don't understand why it's not seeing the XMP metadata.)

Any suggestions on how to get PM 6 Plus to read the metadata from Capture One? (I've been over the Preferences, but don't see anything obvious.)

Are the XMP files in the same folder as the RAF files and do they have the same base name (filename not counting the extension)?

The .xmp files are indeed in the same folder as the images, and are named identically to the image files (not counting the file extension).

I take it that the JPEGs don't have the same metadata as in the XMP files for your RAF files?  When you pair RAW+JPEG, you have the choice of which image to use the metadata as the source.  By default it is the JPEG, but you can make it be the RAW file.  See the IPTC/XMP settings page in the Preferences dialog where there is a popup menu with the title "When viewing photos in RAW+JPEG mode use the metadata from the:" (JPEG file / RAW file).

Kirk, that worked like a charm! Thank you! Capture One doesn't write to JPEG or RAW files, thus the sidecar files. And I see that PM doesn't read from the sidecar for JPEG images. Very good to know!

Cheers!
