Unable to Scan to Catalog
« on: December 18, 2020, 01:34:15 PM »
I haven't been able to scan some folders to my catalog, I am posting two screenshots, and hopefully, it would give some idea of what is going on.
I am scanning one year folder at a time, and 2014 is the one that is not working.
I am running Build 5438 on a windows machine and using MacDrive 10 to be able to read and write to this Mac-formatted drive.
Thanks for your help!

I'd like to see your Photo Mechanic log.  In Photo Mechanic go to the Help menu and choose "Reveal Support Data..." and moments later a Windows Explorer window will come forward with the zipped log file selected.  Use the 'Attachments and other options' link when you're composing your reply to this message and there you'll be able to upload your zipped PM log file.

Thanks,

Paulo,

Looking at your screenshot, I'm puzzled as to why an obvious macOS path is being considered by Photo Mechanic Plus when running on Windows.  That path can't possibly work on Windows regardless of whether the Mac-formatted drive is readable/writable.

Can you please tell me what you're trying to do?

Thanks Kirk!
I Will try to explain, one of the screenshots might be related to something else I was trying after I tried to scan the 2014 folder. I do have a PM_2019 catalog that I might have started on a Mac (before my Imac dyed on me), and I was trying to choose a new location for the 2019 folder because since I moved to windows the path is not the same. On this particular folder, it did not work again. I had this problem before but relocating folder worked on other drives.

But I can not scan some of the folder inside 2014 to the new catalog I am creating with all my files (PM_Arquivo_Geral). It starts the scan and stops after reading some files. Let me know if I am making any sense so far.

Sending the Log attached.

Thanks

Is J:/Fotos/ the macOS-formatted drive?  It looks like there is some sort of access control list/permissions problem that is preventing the scan from progressing deeper into the directory tree.  If Photo Mechanic Plus can't access a folder, it can't catalog it either.  This will have to be corrected on your end.

Hi Paulo,

To clarify - the Scan appears to be getting stuck at:

J:/Fotos/2014/03_Março_14/AM_Bar_MItzvah_Daniel_03_14/Cerimonia_Bar_Mitzvah_Daniel_03_14/01_Selecionadas

Are you able to open and view that folder as a regular Photo Mechanic Plus contact sheet?

J:/Fotos/2014/03_Março_14/AM_Bar_MItzvah_Daniel_03_14/Cerimonia_Bar_Mitzvah_Daniel_03_14/01_Selecionadas

 is an empty folder

I just manage to scan the files in. But I had to skip the empty folders in the folder structure and scan the ones I now had files in manually.

Are you sure they're really empty?  If you mounted that drive on a Mac, would the folders still be empty?

Yes, they should be empty. I will try to plug the drive in a borrowed Macbook pro and let you know for sure as soon as possible.

I have been doing some testing and every time I try to scan a folder with multiple empty folders inside it the scan to catalog dialog box freezes, It seems to stop scanning and I can not stop it, the only way to restart a scan is going to Task Manager and ending PM process. When I restart PM and scan only the folders that are not empty it works fine.

Now if I delete all the empty folder inside the parent folder and try to scan it again it works

Paulo,

Interesting.  We're unable to reproduce the problem.  We've tried using Scan to Catalog on both the macOS and Windows version with folder trees that contain empty folders and they're just skipped and the scan of the remaining folders works fine.  I expect that something is going wrong with empty folders on the macOS-formatted drive specifically when used on a Windows system.

As always many thanks for your effort and time trying to help! It is going to take some extra work but it seems like I will be able to create the catalog by scanning it in parts...

If something else comes to mind I will let you know.

regards,

Paulo

Hi Kirk,

just to let you know, I manage to scan the whole disk now, and as I suspected, the problem I had has to do with empty folders. I deleted all empty folders and was able to scan multiple folders at a time, but every time the scan found an empty folder I miss in the batch of folders I was trying to scan it would halt the scan and I had to terminate the process with task manager and find the empty folder to delete it and then it would work fine.

Do not know if it is a PM bug or a bug in my system. But is clear to me this is the problem.

Just wanted to let you know. Thanks
