no thumbnails

opening Contact Sheet shows 'Sort complete' but no thumbnails.

We would need a little bit more information here to figure out what is going on.  First question. If you look at the folder outside of Photo Mechanic, do you see any images that specific folder? What types of files are in there?

Sounds like you have set a default for the Rating and/or Color Class filters that doesn't show all images.  You can enable all of the values and set that as your default (right-click on the filters to see the contextual menu) and the problem should go away.
