Slow to Open PM
« on: April 30, 2007, 11:35:00 PM »
Greetings.....

Curious as to what might be causing PM to take so long to open.   Currently it takes about 1-3 min.   Seems like a long time and does not open to a folder with images.

I am running on a Dual Core AMD with 2gb RAM and a dedicated temp drive.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks...

Troy

What version of PM are you running?  What are your Caching settings?  (Preferences->Caching)  List all of the settings, please.

Version 4.5 and cache is set to 3000 with reserve to 5000.   I just reduced those settings to 1000 and 1000 to see if that made a difference.  Seems slightly faster but not a ton.

Location of cache is d:\temp\pm
Disk Cache was 3000
Reserve was 5000
Empty on exit is not checked
Remove cache after 7 days is checked.
Memory Cache is 256

Thanks for the very quick response.

If you set Empty on exit, it will speed up quite a bit on loading.  Do you often view the same set of files over and over again?  If not, then you definitely don't need to keep cache files around after exit.

Thanks!   I'll give that a try.  Burning DVD's so can't test atm.   Would increasing the "memory cache size" help at all during regular operation?  If so.....recommended settings.

Also, when burning a CD or DVD is the burn verified?

Thanks for an AWESOME program and for the support!

I'd need to know how much RAM you have and how much RAM you need for other apps.

On Windows, there is no verify pass to the disc burning feature.

I have 2gb of RAM  I usually run PM solo with on other apps.  Sometimes I'll use it with CS3 but not to often.

512 MB sounds good.  If it seems slower when you have several other apps open then push it back down to 256 MB.

Please help!

We, too, are having the same exact problem.  It takes approximately 2.5 minutes to open PM.  Our version is 4.4.3.3 (our upgrade time ran out).

We haven't had this problem before until just now, within the last week or so.  We have the latest Microsoft updates for Win XP.  Don't know if this could be an issue.

We are running:

Windows XP Media Center Edition with SP2
P4 3.2 GHz
2.0 GB RAM
240 GB HDD (182 GB free)

Location of cache is default on c under program files\....photo mechanic....
Disk Cache 512 MB
Reserve 100 MB
Empty on exit is not checked
Remove cache after 30 days is not checked.
Memory Cache 64 MB

Thanks!

Try hiding the Navigator (View->Navigator).
Try setting Empty on exit.

And since you have a fair amount of memory I would at least double your Memory Cache.  You could go as high as 256 MB if you like.  That won't speedup startup times however.

I just found this topic.  Is your last response related to this topic?

PM starts very slow

The issue has been traced to startup of the Navigator.  As a test, try turning off the Navigator by unchecking it on the View menu and then restarting Photo Mechanic.  If it starts up much faster then it is likely some missing mapped network drives that take a long time to timeout when queried for their existence.

Well, I don't know what to say as it "magically" started opening fast again without changing anything.  Maybe there was something on the network that was slowing things up??  Thanks...
