All images are suddenly now "read only"
« on: December 17, 2021, 04:22:51 PM »
All my images in PM+ are suddenly now "read only" even with the HDD connected - I haven't changed any settings knowingly - check boxes to search and add/modify are all checked

Photo Mechanic Plus Version 6.0, build 6097 (85d1687) on MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013) with OSX Yosemite 10.10.5

How can I edit metadata ?

Please can you help ?

Thank you, Mark Wagner

If you right-click on one of the images, is the "Reveal in Context" item (near the bottom) available?

I am thinking that somehow the local catalog state database has lost track of your drive.  You could try opening the Catalog Management window, look for the Local Catalogs area, find your catalog in the list and click the little triangle to the left of its name and then in the Maintenance section (you'll have to click on its expansion triangle) perform a "Reintegrate Forgotten Catalog" operation.

I expect this to fix the problem.

I'd like to see your Photo Mechanic log.  In Photo Mechanic Plus go to the Help menu and choose "Reveal Support Data..." and moments later a Windows Explorer window will come forward with the zipped log file selected.  Use the 'Attachments and other options' link when you're composing your reply to this message and there you'll be able to upload your zipped PM log file.

Thanks,

-Kirk

Peter,

File attached.

Thanks.  Nothing related to your problem appears in the log which isn't unexpected since catalog logging isn't turned on.  But I'm seeing a lot of warnings about a failure to open a catalog called "PHOTOS", on your E:\ drive.  Is your E:\ drive not connected or has the "PHOTOS" folder been renamed or moved to another location?

Hi Kirk,
E drive is a memory stick that wasn't connected.

Hi Kirk,

It may be my lack of experience in using the program. When I select an image then click 'i' I get the read only message. When I select an image then click image then metadata template I can edit the metadata. Is that how it's supposed to work?
Regards,
Peter

Hi Kirk,
E drive is a memory stick that wasn't connected.

Does it have a catalog on it?

The catalog system thinks that you still want to access the catalog and is repeatedly retrying to acquire it.  If you're never going to use it again, you can go into the Catalog Management window, find that catalog in the list of local catalogs (it's called "CATALOG") and click the "Forget" button.  Then the Catalog system will no longer try to open it.

The Metadata (IPTC) Info dialog and the Metadata (IPTC) Template dialog are two different tools.  The Info variant shows and allows you to edit the metadata of a single image.  The Template variant is used to change the metadata on a group of images in bulk.

Do the thumbnails of these images have yellow circles?  If you select one of them and look at the status bar (bottom of the Contact Sheet window), is the path valid and the item accessible?

Hi Kirk,

I've told it to 'forget' the catalogue on E-drive - thanks.

The images do have yellow circles.
When selected, the images have valid paths and can be opened.

Peter

Would you be willing to give me your catalog database file and your catalog state database file so that I can investigate?

Thanks,

Hi Kirk,
1st time using Filezilla, but I think it worked ok.
I've uploaded:
cat_state.sq3
catalog.pmdb
These are from my RAW files PM catalogue. I have other catalogues, but haven't sent those.

Peter
