Command + Click shows number next to collection but don't remain highlighted

When command clicking on multiple collections the parent collections display a number that increases with each click. But only the most recently clicked collection gets highlighted. Is this intentional?

Yes, only one Collection can be selected.

What does the number represent then?

It shows how many items are selected below it in its tree.  Mostly useful for the Browse tab.  It could be removed entirely from the Collections tab.
