catalog sync remembers too much
« on: June 30, 2022, 05:02:21 AM »
When I do a full catalog sync, some files I've renamed are still showing up with their old names, some files for which I've changed their star rating are still showing up both with their old star rating and their new star rating, and some files I've deleted are still showing up. Not all... for the most part, syncs work as I'd expect, but how do I get rid of the phantoms?

Here's another way to put it: how do I get the catalog to forget files which no longer exist, or to forget previous states of files? I want the catalog to just show files that exist, and show them as they are now. And it seems to do that for most files, but not all.

If you've set Catalog Sync to create collections for added/missing items, you can open the missing collection, select the images that really are missing and remove them from the Catalog.

Great! And I didn't realize I'd done it, as I only meant to set up a couple collections for keywords I use often, but within the collection of my largest catalog of images, there's a sub-collection called -sync-, and within that, Missing, and New. One clarification: when I delete an image from the Missing collection, it's just the catalog image, not the original, right? So if I made a mistake and deleted something I shouldn't, it would add it back the next time I did a Full Sync, right?

Also, how do I set up the other catalogs to do added/missing collections?

Use the Remove from Catalog option for the missing images.  The Delete option will delete the selected images.  It will only work for images that are online with a green status dot. Any offline image ( with a yellow status dot ) will popup an error message when you try to delete it.

To setup your other catalogs to create a collection for the Missing and Added files, just select the next catalog in the Catalogs to Sync section and then Add a folder to the Folders to Include in Sync field. The same boxes should be checked in the Automatic Collections to Create section.  The Full Sync Mode should be set at the bottom from your previous Catalog Sync operation. See my attached screen shot with the Catalog Sync dialog setup for the second catalog sync on  Win Media after completing the sync on the Euro Trips.

You would be using "Remove from Catalog", not delete.

When you remove a missing item, it is removed from the catalog only.  When you remove an item that the Catalog knows where it is located, it will offer a delete option that you can use to both remove the item from the catalog and delete the item.

So if I made a mistake and deleted something I shouldn't, it would add it back the next time I did a Full Sync, right?

If you delete something off of the disk, it's gone and it won't come back.  When you Remove something from the catalog, it can come back to the catalog on a Catalog Sync, as long as it still exists on disk.
