keyword issues
« on: January 01, 2023, 01:22:28 PM »
I am a newbie to Photo Mechanic, also new to me is a Nikon Z9 camera, Davinci's Resolve and trying to decide weather to migrate to Capture One from Adobe and among other things my iMac CPU failed and so I have purchased a new Studio Mac. I have about 130,000 photos in various back up hard drives - which are not at present hooked up. While my iMac was down I only had my MacBook Pro and a LaCie Rugged 4T hard drive, it is a 2.4 GHZ Quad core Intel Core I5 which I use to do my photo editing and have just started setting up my Studio Mac. I plan to continue using my Mac Book Pro laptop with the portable LaCie Hard Drive for photo editing. As I will be away from the Studio Mac most the day I plan to continue with this set so need to get it to work.

I have been very lazy with my Meta data but have been working at that. Whenever I open a new folder I grade, delete and enter basic key words, however, I needed to dig up some photos I had photographed at -39º C so I entered Robin and only got one robin showing up in the IPTC Browse field. When I go to the search field I get two robins still not the ones I needed. I go back through my dated folders and find the day I took the pictures and open and find I have entered the meta data. What am I doing wrong - Why does my search not come up with the photos I request in my search?

Are the images you're expecting to find actually in one of your catalogs?

also the number of entries in the browse field is really low especially for a few of the entries - especially bohemian waxwings and pine grosbeaks as I know I recently photographed numerous and have been entering metadata on new shoots.

If images aren't in your catalog, they'll never be returned as results to any query.  If after adding them to your catalog you continue to have problems searching and finding them, please let me know.

Please excuse me for being a complete newbie but I thought they were in the catalogue - Can you point me in the direction where I can learn to get my photos in the catalogue. Right now I think I only need one catalogue but as I become more adept will probably have more

I found the issue that causing my issues I believe as shown on the attachment - screen capture. At some point, soon after purchase or perhaps while on trial .  I created a catalogue called - 2022 Birds - and it was in the Photo Mechanic folder, I guess I was also putting photos in that folder and so at some point I moved the photos. I have searched and cannot find the file. So I will be re-scanning into a new folder I am going to call - Mobile - which will live on my laptop. I will transfer the General catalogue to live on my Studio mac hard drive. I would appreciate a heads up if I am on the right or wrong track here. Thanks for the assistance - Ed
