Default sorting method problem

Hello,
When selecting any of the "Sort By {variable}" methods as a default sorting method in Preferences, sorting always reverts to Filename as default method. (All the other preset/nonvariable options work). I'm looking to have TAG as the default soring method.
Any thoughts?

Change the "Default sorting method:" popup menu to your favorite sort type in the Contact Sheet tab of the Preferences dialog.

That's what I've tried to do (sorry if it wasn't clearly explained). Whenever any of the "Sort by {variable}" is selected, PM does not keep that selection as the Default Sorting Method.
Sort by: Capture Time, Mod Time, Filename, Color Class, etc all work. But not "Sort by {tag}".
