rating auto advance stops working
« on: November 08, 2024, 07:21:03 PM »
I have:
Preferences -> Accessibility -> 0-5 sets Rating
Preferences -> Preview -> Automatically advance… when: all 3 are checked (tag, color, rating)
Dual screen setup, with contact sheet on one screen, previews on the other

With an image on the contact sheet selected, I can type 1-5 and it will mark the image with the rating and auto advance…. every so often when I do some combination of “crop” “preview” and/or zoom, it stops auto advancing when I go back to the contact sheet.

If I close the preview window (close or ESC), and then double click on an image in the contact sheet, it goes back to auto-advancing…. It has been this way for at least a year of updates.

It still happens with PM and PM+ v6.0 build 7212 (90865b3) - what I am currently running

Any suggestions ? Any suggestions on how to capture status when this happens ?
So far I have not found a “consistent” sequence of the crop/preview/zoom sequence, except there are a number of times that it is just a crop/preview with no zoom needed.

When I have several thousand images from an event and they want me to turn it around over-night, this is very impactful to get my 1st and 2nd level sort done.

If the Contact Sheet window is the currently active window, then it won't auto advance. I'd guess that if you simply click into the Preview window to make it the active window, it will resume advancing when you change the rating.

Unfortunately that does not work, even after selecting either a unrated or an already rated image in the contact sheet it does not auto advance after applying a rating.

The only work around is to close the “preview window” by either hitting “ESC” or clicking on “x - close”

Jeff,

Unfortunately that does not work, even after selecting either a unrated or an already rated image in the contact sheet it does not auto advance after applying a rating.

At this point in time, are you rating the image in the Preview window or in the Contact Sheet window?

doing ratings in the preview window has never worked for me… it just throws away the 1-5, is that the expected operation ???
so I am doing the rating with the contact sheet selected.

I have found another “idiosyncrany”: if I double click on the image in the contact sheet with the preview window already up, then type a rating, the auto advance starts working again.

When you double-click on the Contact Sheet, it makes the Preview window the active window, so it sounds like adding ratings in the Preview window *is* working for you (and this was essentially my first suggestion: to make the Preview window the active window). As far as "throwing away" ratings, of course it shouldn't be doing that, and we've never heard of it doing so, so it would be

I think best way for us to help you on this is for you to give us a call and screenshare with us so you can demonstrate both of the issues that you've described. Seeing what is happening on your screen give us a lot of clarity into the issue you are describing. You can call us at 503-547-2888, we're available from 9am to 5pm Pacific Time.

Jeff,

What do you have your "Single Key Shortcuts" set to in the Accessibility page of the Preferences dialog?  If it is the first choice (0-8 sets Color Class), then you need to use Ctrl along with the number to do ratings.  If you chose the second choice (0-5 sets Rating) then I'd expect pressing 0 through 5 to set the rating in both the Contact Sheet window and the Preview window, when the respective window has focus.

so I am doing the rating with the contact sheet selected.

Then setting the rating will not auto-advance.  You need to set the rating in the Preview window in order for the Preview window to do the auto-advance as instructed in the Preview page of the Preferences dialog.  The Contact Sheet window doesn't offer any auto-advance features.

I have found another “idiosyncrany”: if I double click on the image in the contact sheet with the preview window already up, then type a rating, the auto advance starts working again.

That's how it always works.  The Preview window needs to be the window that you're working in for any of the auto-advance functions to work.
