Preview images in Contact Sheet
« on: November 16, 2024, 04:45:57 AM »
I use my camera FUJI XH2 set to Black and white profile for the viewfinder. This means the images for jpeg and raw are black and white in the camera.
I thought if I went into CAMERA RAW and changed the profile to a colour one then this would be reflected in the preview image in the PHOTOMECHANIC contact sheet (the contact sheet in camera raw is now in colour).
I have the preferences  (enable raw rendering) in photomechanic set to USE DNGCONVERTER but the contact sheet still is in B/W.

Is the contact sheet using the jpeg?

Also in the Render Cache the option " BUILT IN REnder" is greyed out. Is that normal.

Thanks.

Using Photo Mechanic Version 6.0, build 7212 (90865b3).

By default Photo Mechanic displays the embedded JPEG for standalone RAW files and displays the JPEG when RAW and JPEG files are combined into one thumbnail. Unless Camera Raw updates the embedded JPEG in the RAW file (which I don't think any software actually does), then the embedded JPEG is going to remain black and white.

When you Enable RAW Rendering, then the image that you'll see in Photo Mechanic is the embedded JPEG from the DNG that Adobe DNG Converter creates (the DNG is thrown out after it is created and the JPEG extracted). What that JPEG looks like is entirely up to how Adobe DNG converter interprets the raw data. That said, one of my colleagues grabbed a sample file with a black and white film simulation and when I enable RAW rendering, it shows the image in color. My guess is that you have the RAW and JPEG combined into one thumbnail, so it skips even attempting to render the DNG, because it's showing the JPEG.

Yes.

Thanks.
I looked at the contact sheet with NON combined image and still have 2  black and white images yet the raw is in colour now!

Do I need to do something to kickstart the DNG?

Is there some other option that needs set in preferences?

The DNG Converter is likely looking for Adobe Camera RAW settings and not finding any, renders with defaults.  I do not know if it observes and follows the Fuji Black and White profile (possibly in their proprietary maker note data).  If you have Adobe Photoshop, and open the RAW file, how does the Adobe Camera RAW plugin render it?  Is it in color or b/w?

Hi Kirk
In Adobe Camera raw the image is in colour.

My thinking was I would go into the folder (in camera raw), select all and change the profile from B/W to a colour profile, then when I went into PM I would have a B/W JPeg and a colour Raw. Just not working for me.

PS its at least 13 years since I last asked you to solve a problem  ;D

Louis,

Is that it?

Is what it?  If you want the JPEGs to be updated, you'd have to regenerate them from the RAW file with a B&W setting (or just convert the JPEGs to B&W directly), in order for them to look like they were B&W photos.  As for the DNGs, you'd have to set them to be B&W, and either regenerate the embedded previews, or use the Adobe DNG Converter as your RAW renderer in PM for them to look like they were B&W photos.
