"Jump To" in a Contact Sheet
« on: January 12, 2025, 09:40:44 AM »
"Jump to" feature within a Contact Sheet

Please consider adding a feature to quickly "jump to" specific images by capture date/time within a Contact Sheet.

Use Case: Remote cameras capture a goal sequence at 7:58pm.  After ingesting these images - and commingling them with handheld shots - the Contact Sheet is quite large.  It would be helpful to have a way to quickly jump to the first image shot at 7:58pm, so these images are quicker to access & publish on deadline.

I would think this could be sourced from the sort cache.

Good one.

And we would like different parameters, right?

Like an option to jump 10 etc. photos at a time.
From tag to tag. 1 star to 1 star.

Could be an option under settings.

Hi Ulrik, sure, I don't need those particular parameters, but all for it if others do (and the added complexity didn't delay delivery of a "jump to" feature for date/time).

You may know this already, but you can jump from tag-tag or star-star ratings with existing functionality.  For tags, just select "Tagged" from the drop-down beside the "Reverse" checkbox.  For rated images, just deselect ratings 0, 2, 3, 4 and 5 (based on your example) to jump between one-star-rated images.

Thanks.

I know that.

Just the example with a lot of photos some might like to jump to between tagged photos and then find photos around it quicker than sort for them..

Just a thought.

I can see how it would be useful, but do you have any suggestions for the UI/UX? For example, in MacOS Finder you can simply start typing the name of the item and it will select the first thing that matches as you type. I use this feature all the time, but of course this would be problematic in Photo Mechanic because of how many keys are already tied to shortcuts. One concept I have based on your suggestion is maybe a window that has a slider where you set the interval (ranging from days down to seconds) and then as you move that slider, the values in the list get more or less granular. That just an initial idea though, so let us know your thoughts.

Thats tricky.

But a mix of the slider as you write (when it comes to time jumps) and then boxes for tags and stars.

But I get the problem here.

Cameras just have limited choices like 10 or 25 photos....

because of how many keys are already tied to shortcuts.

or you could give us the ability to to change shortcuts first

But on the topic, I would love to be able to
1. jump to photo by its number in contact sheet. say jump to photo 345
2. make selections based on photo numbers. not sure how useful this would be be, but sometimes clients like to send you number of photos in the gallery, not the filenames. say client asked to retouch photos 3, 10, 51 and 102. So instead of finding the corresponding file names, you just find them by their number

UX/UI for simple "jump to image" could be a menu item (and a shortcut) similar to cmd+f and you just type the number there. Or even additional mode in cmd+f search window, to search by multiple images by their numbers in current contact sheet

For UX/UI , my personal preference  - as a Windows user - is to press a short key sequence that opens a floating box (like CTRL-G does for Ingest), into which the "jump to" parameter is entered.  The expected result is that the first image meeting the parameter is highlighted, and the floating box stays open until the user closes it.

We'd also need a menu item somewhere to configure what data element the user wants to jump-to, such as date/time, image #, and so on.  This assumes that the user has a predominant preference for this feature, such as searching by date/time vs. file name or other metadata.
