Collection arrangement
« on: February 12, 2025, 12:07:46 AM »
Hello everyone,

why when I open a collection the photos are not sorted as the Capture Time but as Arrangement?

There's a way to set a sorted view as default?

Thank you Max, I've already set this (when I started to use PM some years ago) but seems not working in the Catalog/Collection section.

After reviewing the code for opening a Contact Sheet of a Collection, it does appear that it opens in Arrangement sort mode intentionally. As for why it was designed that way, my best guess is that it made sense for an arbitrary set of items to default to a sort method that allows for an arbitrary order, even when the default sorting method for any other kind of Contact Sheet is set to something else. That said, maybe we can set up a preference to allow for Collections to follow the preference that Max referred to.

And one final note: in my testing, when I opened a collection where I had not previously manually arranged the images, they were sorted by filename, not capture time. Probably won't make a difference in most cases, but figured that was worth pointing out.

Hello ahoward,

I think that could be a good option to have.

That said I noticed also that if I select all the photos in a Collection the drag&drop to move all the files in an app, for example Lr, it doesn't work.

Did the thumbnails have green catalog status indicators (green dots) or yellow ones?  If they're yellow, then the files are not online and drag and drop can't work.

Do you run Photo Mechanic Plus on macOS or Windows?

I just tried this and it worked fine for me.

What specific version of MacOS are you on?
What specific version of Lightroom are you working with?
Do you have this problem with applications other than Lightroom (and if so, what other apps have you tried)?
What kind of files are in this selection?
What part of the UI is your cursor on when you release your mouse button to 'drop' the images (Dock icon, the 'Library' view, or the Import module)?
If you do the drag and drop from a contact sheet that is not for a Collection, do you have the same problem with that?

What specific version of MacOS are you on?
macOS Sequoia 15.3.1

What specific version of Lightroom are you working with?
Lightroom 8.2

Do you have this problem with applications other than Lightroom (and if so, what other apps have you tried)?
The issue is not connected to the apps because after I selected all the files, I'm going on one of the single photo, I'm clicking with trackpad or pen and the selection disappear

What kind of files are in this selection?
RAW, in this case RAF

What part of the UI is your cursor on when you release your mouse button to 'drop' the images (Dock icon, the 'Library' view, or the Import module)?
As I said above, the 'Library' view

If you do the drag and drop from a contact sheet that is not for a Collection, do you have the same problem with that?
No, this is the point. If I'm doing it from a contact sheet that is not for a Collection I don't have this problem

As I said above, the 'Library' view

The 'Library' view was not mentioned previously in this thread as far as I can see? Further, it looks like you are using Lightroom CC, rather than Lightroom Classic, and Lightroom CC doesn't really have different modules like a Library view the way that Lightroom Classic does, so I am still unclear on what part of the interface you are dropping the files on. For what its worth, when I previously said it worked fine, I was using Lightroom classic, not Lightroom CC, but I tried Lightroom CC 8.1 after you stated the version and when I drop files on the grid of images, it works fine there as well. I'm having some trouble getting the 8.2 update to install today so I'll have a go at that when I'm back in the office on Tuesday.

I also don't understand what you mean by this. Could you perhaps provide a screen recording showing the problem so we can get a better understanding of what you are doing?

I'm sorry ahoward,

the issue is when after selecting all the files you're going on a photo and you're trying to drag & drop all in Lr. The selection disappears.
If I'm doing the same thing in a normal Contact Sheet, not a Collection, it works without any issue.
