Back Up HD file system format
« on: February 19, 2025, 04:37:52 AM »
Hello everyone,

I'm on macOS system and I'd like to have some advices about the best file system to use on the hard drives I'll use for back up.
On macOS system the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) is the best choice but the ExFAT file system has the advantage of the compatibility with Windows system.

For some reasons maybe we will need to read the HD on a Windows system, so I'm a little bit confuse on which file system to choose.

Which file system are you using and why?

At this point the best file system to use with an Apple operating system is probably Apple File System rather than MacOS Journaled.

As far as I know, your options are really just those two and exFAT. It's been quite a while since I tested, but the last time I did, I think I saw performance of the drive that I tested on basically cut in half when formatted to exFAT when using on MacOS. I don't know if that was a bug with a particular MacOS update or if that's just how performance always is. When researching this question I found many reports of folks saying that they prefer using a native file system for their OS and compatibility software like MacDrive if they need cross-platform compatibility for the drive.
