"search my mac"-style search in windows
« on: April 10, 2025, 07:23:37 AM »
I have always been a Mac user but recently left my journalism job for a corporate communications job where they use PCs. So forgive me if this is really basic but....

PhotoMechanic on a Mac has the "Search My Mac" bar on the upper left that allows me to search for key words across multiple collections basically letting my search my whole computer (or any sub part of my computer) for any images with the keword "fireworks", for example.

But I don't see a similar function on a Windows PC.

Is this me not knowing how to use a PC or is this indeed a function that doesn't exist on Windows machines?

Thanks in advance!

No, there is no equivalent functionality on Windows

That's a bummer.

Is there a functionality that would let me search inside an open contact sheet for keywords?

Again, this might be my unfamiliarity with Windows but right now I'm just having to visually scroll through my 2025 folder to find images. And I have not seen any way to do any searching within PM.

Thanks again for your help. I've used PM for 20 years on a mac and was really proficient. But this move to PCs makes me feel like a newbie all over again.

The 'Find' tool in the Edit menu does this, with far more flexibility and power than the 'Search my Mac' function has. Or you could check out Photo Mechanic Plus for the ability to create a searchable database of all your images.
