Star Ratings Error

I'm trying cull RAW Fuji X100VI images from the PM Catalog on my laptop while disconnected from the external drive with the image files. I can see all of the image thumbnails, meta data, exif info, sort, delete images, etc. The only thing I can't seem to do is add Star Ratings or Color Classes. I'm getting a pop-up error box says:

"While setting a rating an error occurred:"

The details box below the error message is blank. Everything works fine if the external drive is connected. I did submit a ticket over the weekend, but thought this might be a newbie problem and one of you would know how to fix. Any ideas?

Photo Mechanic Plus does not allow metadata modifications to an image while it is offline.

Followup...

I see that the PM-Catalog is on the laptop however the .xmp files are with the full-size images on the external drive.

I seem to have imported these wrong if I understood it correctly that with PM+ I could cull/rate/crop, etc while being disconnected from the external drive.

I'm just getting started with this new computer and PM + and my goal is to be able to keyword/caption/cull/rate etc. while disconnected from the external drive and have it sync when reconnected. I'll be cropping and editing selections from PM+ in LR.

I need to re-read the ingest instructions for what I'm trying to do and figure out if it is even possible.

No, you haven't imported anything wrong.  Photo Mechanic Plus does not allow modification in any way, an image that is not currently accessible on the file system.  This includes renaming/moving/labeling/rating/soft-rotating/cropping, and captioning.  However, you can remove an image that is offline from the catalog.

Thank you Kirk. So, I set up my "first" LR+ catalog and my first ingest attempt on my new laptop correctly and the images and .xmp structure on the external drive look fine. I will plug in the external drive to rate. I've tried that and it works good.
