more options to classify images
« on: October 29, 2025, 07:20:24 PM »
I can't be the only person that needs this?

during our busy season shooting events with multiple cameras at the same event and multiple sections within an event, that may be shot by the same camera, I am in a situation where I need to order images and sort them before renaming them.  The option of 0-5, so 6 effective choices and tagging with the check mark are not enough, and the colour options are already used for others things.

What I want is the ability to add a letter tag to images. So this group of images is "A"  the next "B" etc.  This does not need to be carried over into Lightroom or photoshop I just need it in the sorting before renaming phase in my culling process.  Having 26 options would solve my issues, heck even going to the number 9 on the ratings would be helpful but I still need more than that at times so letters are better.

Thanks

Craig

Hi, when I encounter the situation you describe, I organise the photos into subfolders. Then I can use hotcodes based on the folder names to add custom metadata to the images. If you need a more detailed explanation of my workflow, please let me know.

similar to how I did for one event where I sorted images based on folder and hour,
folder corresponded to ROOM, while hour corresponded to SPEAKER in that room at that time

You are not alone.

I have suggested that both for numbers and colours needs to go 9 so you can write from 1 to 99 with the two.

But adding letters in top of it would be perfect.

Then I could write most of the captions in the preview window. That would be perfect.

I also raised it with Sony for more in the camera....

The issue is, I use the colours for other things, such as images that will be cut, images that need a bit of work, cropping etc, ID Tag shots get a colour, etc.   That is part of the process and needs to be done at the same time as I am reordering them for renumbering. Just the ability to Assign A, B, C, D... etc. would solve the issue.  Don't need it top translate into Lightroom like the colour and ratings tags do.

Thanks for your reply,  am not sure that I understand your process though - I don't need to add info to the metadata (I realise that ratings and colours are metadata info - but I think that the issue for me, is I also need to see the images in one long continuous page of thumb nails so I can see what needs to be ordered where - for me I would have trouble processing this mentally if all the images were in different folders, but I would be interested to hear more about what you do.

Hi Craig, it's possible to organise images into subfolders and also view all images on a single contact sheet. If you right-click on the parent folder, it offers a couple of options to open all subfolders in one sheet. When I'm sorting using subfolders, it's mainly to easily add customised metadata to images, but I also find it helpful for culling, as all similar images are kept together. If you could provide me with more details about your current pain points in your workflow, I'll see if I can think of a solution.

All the best,

Alex
