how to write .xmp files to .jpg image
« on: February 16, 2026, 01:59:21 PM »
I have a number of iPhone photos and their associated .xmp files. How can I write this .xmp data to the file so I can retain the info but delete the .xmp file?

Attached are my xmp/iptc settings.

Thanks for any help.

There's not really a straightforward way to get metadata from an XMP file into a JPEG. You could load the XMP file into the Metadata Info window, but you'd need to do that for each image (or load it into the Metadata Template and apply the Template into selections of corresponding images).

I'm curious how the XMP files came to exist in the first place? I don't think I've ever seen the stock camera app create XMP files, I'd think that any application that was adding metadata would just embed it in the JPEG?

I'm honestly not sure how these files came about. I'm just using the regular camera app and it has been producing them.

However, I took a group of them and deleted the .xmp files and the data was in the .jpg. So I'm confused as to where these .xmp files came from and what their purpose is.

I don't think the phone has always produced these. I'm going to try and figure out why it's happening now.

Thanks for your response.

Hey AnnieP
Are you exporting Originals from the Photo's app?   In that dialog there is an option to export IPICT at XMP.
