Removing XMP keywords

I'm finding that removing keywords from some iStock photos in Photomechanic is not actually removing the XP keywords.  I've rempved keywords from a set of images and Photomechanic, Photoshop, Lightroom all show the keywords field blank.  When I use exiftool command line and scan the file the  keywords still show in the XP field.    I'm stumped!
