"Browse with…" not working
« on: Yesterday at 04:51:46 PM »
Hello,
Until I updated to Photo Mechanic version 2026.2, build 9034 (cae4923) I was able to browse a folder's contents with a "Services" pop-up (pop-out?) in the Finder or, alternately, with an option-down-arrow keystroke. While I had the previous version of the app on my Mac the service would note that it was pointing at a different version of the app. Okay, I deleted (Trashed and Empty Trash) the previous (v6?) version.

When I read, here in the forum, about the same problem, I thought I had the solution: press the option key when using the pop-out and, thus, be given the opportunity to choose the desired app. That process would start to work, bringing up a window displaying the content of the apps folder, that window would not come to the front and, though I could scroll through to my current PM by using the mouse scroll wheel, clicking on the app did not click "on" the app, but merely caused the window to disappear. I tried several times.

And, actually, the non-clickable apps window appears, now, even without pressing a modifier key. I attach a screen shot of that window.

Mac Studio M3 Ultra, 512 GB RAM, macOS Tahoe 26.3.1.

Thanks, Mark

It's been quite a while since I set this up, but I believe it's only a problem when you are in the "list" view like you have shown in the screenshot. If you change the window to the "icon" view using the little bulleted list button at the top of the window, I think you can click on Photo Mechanic there. This may have changed in MacOS Tahoe, I haven't tested this there yet, but give that a shot and let us know how it goes.

Thank you, ahoward,

I was able to change to icon view (though command-1 did not operate) by clicking the icon you suggested. Clicking on it caused the underlying window to disappear but the pop-up that allowed the display selection would appear. Selecting "icon view" would, when the next attempt was made, display the applications folder as icons. Okay. Scroll down to reveal Photo Mechanic and click. Unlike previously, the click did seem to actually land, with the app's icon changing slightly (the icon's background would darken briefly), and the window would disappear. This did not, however, result in the hoped-for result. Invoking the Services pop-out would, again, merely reveal that applications window. (And while clicking on any portion of that window would cause it to disappear, I could click anywhere else in the Finder, including opening some other folder, without the apps window going away.)

I seem to recall, quite a while ago, that there was an applet you ran to make this happen? I dunno…

And that made me wonder if it is included! Indeed, I found such a file — not an applet, AFAIK — in the Extras folder, "BrowseWithPMService.service" in Version 2, that comes with PM and I installed it per their instructions. (I think.)

That didn't resolve the issue. Perhaps I'll have to restart to get it to work?
