Bug in latest version.
« on: July 24, 2026, 02:10:41 AM »
When i look at a folder in PM it only shows 4 files but when I look at the same folder in the finder it shows 5 files. Pm does not show the _DSF0337_C_C.RAF  but it shows only the other _DSF0337_C_2_C_2_C.RAF file.

PLease note this is not a one off file it is happening with other files.

Obviously when using PM I want to see these original files the fact that i cannot see and organise makes the whole program redundant.

Why can PM not see a file  the finder sees.

My apologies in advance if I am doing something stupid but I have double checked and cannot figure it out.  Thank you.

PS I went into the finder and then opened the missing raw file in photoshop, it exists!

I think your issue is that in PM settings, you've got the combine RAW and JPG files option turned on; that is why you're only seeing 4 images in PM

Is that different from the drop option in the header bar "VIEW" then "COMBINED IMAGES".  Is there a different outcome for the 2 settings.

Many thanks.

Is it possible that a deleted file may still show in finder (but not in PM)  because the OS has not caught up?

Hi, yes, you can also do it from 'view' shortcut Cmd+J

PM is showing five images, but the combined RAW and JPG are not the same images but have the same name. I've marked your screenshot.

You've named your images in what I would consider an unconventional way by sharing _DSF0337_ prefix with on all the images.

The checkbox in the Settings window is the default behavior for when you open a Contact Sheet. The option in the View menu is the status of the current Contact Sheet.

I guess anything is possible, but when you delete a file (with Photo Mechanic), it goes to the system's trash by way of a function provided by the MacOS SDK. Finder typically recognizes this change instantaneously.

Alex the camera recycles the numbers once past 9999. I have no choice the numbering is by the camera not me.

Could A PM support person help with this. Why does a finder view show 4 images but when viewing the same folder in PM only 3 show up.

I followed Howards comment . THANK YOU. Howard.

I attach 2 screenshots one with images combined and one with images NOT combined. The file _MG_0088_C.CR disappears when images combined is switched on.

Is this a bug. I have been using PM for a very long time and it was my understanding that the combined images option turned off was to show the JPG related to a raw file.

In the above a  .CR2 file disappears and it has no jpg attached.

Can you explain the logic behind PM's behaviour please.

I'm not quite sure what the confusion is. alexmacnaughton's post explains what it is going on. If two files have the same base filename and "Combined images" is checked in the 'View' menu, those two files will be combined into a single thumbnail. If you need additional assistance with this I recommend that you give us a call at 503-547-2888

As you can see all the files have unique names. The file that disappears does not have a name identical to any other.

This is quite different from 2 files such as DSCF1475.JPG and DSCF1475.RAF which are 2 files generated from one shot on a camera.

I am in the Uk and calling PM would be very expensive unless I could do this by whatsapp, but I really have nothing to add to the above.

If you can identify how PM combines files for viewing when the actual file names are different I might be able to understand what is going on.

Are you saying the combine option is not intended for a raw file and its identically named jpg file which is obviously not the case here.

Thank you.

In the second screenshot I see:

_MG_0088_C.JPG
_MG_0088_C.CR2

These two files look like they have the exact same base filename to me, and are being combined into:

_MG_0088_C.CR2+JPG

Thank you for your reply.

I guess my surprise is that 2 totally different images - content +size+creation date+Camera are combined by PM. It also means that PM is using the JPG image when looking at the contact sheet thumbnail even though the .cr2 file is completely different.

If that is not a bug, what could anyone call it. Can you say if the above will be addressed as a fix or if it will be left as is.

I have used 5 different canon cameras in my time (but now fuji) and they all used the same  _MG_XXXX scheme  maybe still do?

Special APP for sorting.
For those interested in the reason behind this I developed an app.
The app allows me to list  base file names and it then creates a folder for each base name and puts inside it ALL variations of that file from every drive on my system. The files in the new folder have_C attached because everything is a copy and all the original files remain untouched.
It then deletes any duplicates from the copies it created and others under various criteria and it does take into account files with identical file names but it looks beyond that at other parameters to ensure that retains both files. It leaves the original date and the modification date untouched in the copy.
Thus leaving me with a definitive master file for each top image with the original plus  DXO'd, denoised, various sized (Print/Insta/WEB) versions.
The images I list to the app are those that have been published, won awards, won qualifications, been sold etc.
With a ridiculous number of images over 25+ years and many backup files the above was an inhumane task but easy for an app.

Hi, Apologies if I'm misunderstanding your issue. But from what you've posted, PM is functioning correctly if you have a RAW file, as in your example .cr2 and JPG with the same name PM will combine them if you don't want to happen; you can turn this behaviour off in settings.

As far as I know, if you have a RAW file and a JPG with the same name PM will combine them. The JPG could have been made at the same time in camera as the RAW, or it could have been made at a later date on the computer. So 'content +size+creation date+Camera' will not affect whether it's combined or not.

From what you have shown, you haven't renamed your file, and as cameras reset their numbering, they get to 9,999 back to zero, I would have thought this could cause you a problem when sorting by file name.

Personally, I would advise people to rename their images after culling, so they have a unique name. I rename my image: job-ddmmyyyy-seqn.

Hi Alex
Thanks but I guess I needed that advice 25 years ago unfortunately I am where I am and I understand your explanation as it is what I was pointing out.

If you are happy that 2 unrelated files are combined used simply the filename I can only say that I am not. Camera numbering has been with us since the year dot and PM is MANAGEMENT utility which I have used for a very long time and which I think is excellent.

However the metadata is there and Pm could distinguish between 2 very different images and not combine them. 'Content +size+creation date+Camera+HASH' can be used to decide if they are combined or not.

I hope this is something PM will fix as a positive improvement to the program and I look forward to hearing their response.

As time marches on more and more files will have duplicate file names but different 'content +size+creation date+Camera+hash' . Perhaps as an option "Check  X parameter as well as filename" ?
