Re-size for web
« on: August 17, 2007, 10:00:22 AM »
This is, I'm sure a very basic question, but after searching the manual and the forums, I'm unable to resize an image to a specific file size for web export as an attachment. I am attempting to convert a NEF file to a JPG file no larger than 100kb. I see how that can be done when using PM to email by using the slider to control file size, but can't find a way to re-size for subsequent attachment. When I highlight an image in PM and choose file>save as, I get a message saying none of the selected photos can be saved at high resolution. Can you please direct me to the appropriate manual section? Using PM 4.5.1.1 and OS 10.4.10. Thanks, Richard

Please make sure you have the "Enable RAW Rendering (using Apple's ImageIO)" checked in the RAW preferences tab of the Preferences dialog.

Kirk: thanks for the rapid response as per usual. I saw that option in preferences, but was unable to find an explanation in the manual as the RAW tab is missing in the 4.4 manual pdf. So, now I have two more questions. In the attached screen shot, the slider shows a size of 114kb. The next increment to the left gets it to 80kb. If I wanted to get it =<100kb, what would be the best method to do so? Also, while PM is really directed at pro and/or accomplished photographers/computer users, there are lots of us who are retired and getting back into photography. For those in my age set, we come at least in my case, with limited computer skills unless you count Solitaire, emailing and the occasional Word document. So, the second question is has Camerabits ever considered a manual directed at us less experienced folks, something like Photo Mechanic for Retired Dummies? Thanks, Richard

You could try turning on the "Subsample chroma" checkbox which will reduce the size further.  You may then be able to increase the quality slightly and still get the image under 100KB.

We're not so good at manuals.  We don't have anyone on staff dedicated to creating manuals so we have to contract them out.  The 4.5 manual should be done soon however and maybe it will be helpful for you.

But please feel free to ask questions here.  I am more than happy to answer.
