I'm trying to clear color tags from a set of images so I can start tagging them anew ... is there a way to select say 1000+ images and clear ratings and color tags?

Yes.

Select your images.
Then hold down the "Modifier Key" (Windows: Shift, Mac: Option) and click on the Color Class button and choose "None" from the menu that appears.

The Modifier Key and all of its uses are documented in the Photo Mechanic 4.5.3 manual.
