Ingest with Synchrotec Expresscard CF Reader....
« on: April 29, 2008, 05:24:46 AM »
Trouble in paradise...
Kernal Panics when using Synchrotec CF Card Express Slot Reader and Firewire 800 external drive on Mac Book Pro.
Happens at end of card download when ingesting through Photo Mechanic to both onboard and external drive.......
Much quicker download (less than 1/2 time of using USB reader).

No problem if I just copy images...

Has anyone used eSATA through ExpressCard Slot on Mac Book Pro???
I want to keep all drives on separate buses...

I'm running Leopard FYI

Sounds like a bug in Leopard.  User level-programs like Photo Mechanic shouldn't be able to cause a kernel panic on their own without a bug in the OS or some sort of hardware or driver issue.

Do you have PM set to automatically unmount the card when the ingest is finished?  If so, if you turn this feature off, does the problem go away?

OK so I turned off the auto dismount feature and it seemed fine but alas, every two or three cards she crashes (a full gray screen kernel panic)...
I only have the problem when using the reader with photo mechanic....

Have you tried contacting the manufacturer of the device?

Yes,
they said the problem only seems to be cropping up with Leopard and PhotoMechanic.
They said they sent a Reader to Dennis to play with but that he wasn't that interested because the card doesnt work with WA cards (Lexars).
It is much faster than the Delkin....Rob Galbraith uses it for benchmarking.
It may well be the driver but perhaps we could give them some hints on how to solve it.....

I'll be seeing Dennis tomorrow through Thursday so while I'm there I'll ask him about it.

Was there ever any resolution to this?  I'm having the same issue with a Lexar Expresscard CF reader causing kernel panics when ingesting with photomechanic (version 4.6.6).

Model Name:   MacBook Pro
  Model Identifier:   MacBookPro4,1
Processor Name:   Intel Core 2 Duo
  Processor Speed:   2.6 GHz
  Number Of Processors:   1
  Total Number Of Cores:   2
  L2 Cache:   6 MB
  Memory:   4 GB
  Bus Speed:   800 MHz

I've contacted Lexar but they haven't been too helpful yet.

No.  I never heard about any solutions to this issue (it's also two years old).  What happens if you copy files from the reader directly from the Finder?  Does it kernel panic then as well?

Well the one time I tried that it worked without any problems, but I didn't do it anymore than once.

I gave up on the CF ExpressCard readers.

I attach a serial drive through an Apiotek eSATA Exp Card Adapter and use an FW 800 reader for the CFCards.
Not very sleek, but effective.
