File Renaming in Exporter
« on: March 16, 2009, 08:07:48 AM »
I am trying to use the Exporter to generate web images. I am having trouble with the image names. It must be something I am missing but when I check the "Use original filenames for images" I get both the original extension and the new extension something like "1234.tif.jpeg". If I don't check the use original filename I get a generic name with a numerical sequence. Is there a means of using the original file name with just the new extension? I am running Windows XP, SP 3. I have not tried it on my laptop with Vista.

The new update (4.6) is terrific. Thanks!

No, and it is by design.  If we trimmed off the original extension then added on the .jpeg there would be no way to find out what the original filename was.  Also, if you were to export different formats of the same image, for instance .NEF, .TIF, and .JPEG, then the three files could not coexist together since they would all end up having the same name.  By adding on .jpeg to the original filename, we avoid this problem and make it possible for you to determine the original filename.

OK, Thanks for the quick response. I'm not sure that that makes a valid name for a web gallery but I'll see if I can work around it.

I'm not sure what you mean?  What would be invalid?

Oh! I guess that sounded a little vague. I usually convert from tif's to jpeg's for web use and save them for my web site as "WXYZ.jpeg" rather than "WXYZ.tif.jpeg". Since I convert them and save them to a different folder there has never been a problem with confusion on file names. It also makes it easier to find the original tif I need it for submission or sale. I have been using Expression Media to do the conversions but I like working with PM so much I have been trying to use it for more things. I am one of the lurkers who has been following your progress on a DAM application with great interest. LOL
