for some reason the red upload failure box is rectangular in some & almost square in other files - is there a reason other then a bug?

Actually - I just noticed the the edited files have a square the original files have rectangular box.

It's not a bug.  You'll notice that on the ones with the thinner box the thumbnail is a RAW+JPEG and the ones with the thicker box are JPEG only.  If you had uploaded both the RAW and the JPEG, you would have had two upload status indicators, two thin ones stacked on top of each other.

It's by design.
