Hi,
I have noticed the "download original" option in the PM Classic web-gallery.
I am not 100% sure how it works.

Is there a way to link to the original files, by pointing to a folder on the server, instead of pointing to the single file?

I'm not sure why you would need to do that.  The preview images link to the full size images and allow the user to obtain them directly.
