Address book in Send as e-mail
« on: May 02, 2006, 01:00:18 AM »
When I open the dialog Send as email, and I want to replace the current address with an address from my Address Book, I click to get the dropdown menu and the spinning wheel starts. It takes 2 - 5 seconds for the menu to appear and scrolling in the menu starts the wheel again. Is it OSX or PM that is slow?

PB 15" 1,5gb RAM, 10.4.6, 4.4.3 beta 2, but it also happened in 4.4.2

How many addresses appear in the popup menu?  Basically, I query the "Address Book" for all of the email addresses and I dynamically build the menu, which if you had many hundreds of email addresses, I would expect this to take some time.  Once the menu appears, Photo Mechanic is pretty much out of the loop and the system is displaying and interacting with the menu.

I could make this functionality less dynamic and only build the menu once and that would help with the initial popup time, but it wouldn't help explain why you get busy cursors while interacting with the menu.

It sounds like a combination of a large number of email addresses and a lack of free memory at the time of your interaction with the menu.  Any idea how much RAM you have free when you're doing this?

Answer the above questions and I'll see what I can do.

Something that might help: I just added (like in the last half hour) auto-completion for email addresses that appear in the Address Book application.  You can't type the symbolic name for a person, but if you are familiar with their email address, then you may not even need to use the popup menu at all.

Hi Kirk,

I have approx. 110 - 120 addresses in the address book.
I have just tested it with 313 mb free RAM.
It takes 12 seconds for the spinning wheel to show the dropdown menu.
It took 55 seconds to scroll to the bottom of the list.
It took 1min 42 sec to scroll to the top from bottom.
One other thing. I tried 4 times to open the dropdown menu. 3 times the menu appears and disappears immediately.
This is probably not a memory issue. A colleague told me she had the same problem with it disappearing on a G5 quad with 16 gb RAM.

The auto fill would be a very nice feature.

Thanks for your, as usual, swift action on questions
Søren

I have far more addresses in my address book and the menu appears instantly.  Once the menu appears, it scrolls like any other menu (at this point, it is out of my hands anyway.)

I wonder if the JPEG size estimate thread is getting in the way...  Try this.  Wait until you see a size value next to the JPEG quality slider.  Then click on the menu button.  Is it any faster?

Thanks,

-Kirk

Just wondering.
When PM is idle it uses 140+ mb RAM and 425+ mb Virtuel memory.
Is this the standard?

That depends on your memory cache settings in Photo Mechanic.  What is the size of your memory cache?
