Back on the "launch" topic
« on: December 23, 2009, 03:35:05 PM »
I know you can list additional launching apps in preferences, but I'd like to be able to associate particular programs with particular file types — namely, I shoot both Nikon and Canon RAW files and, of course, have myriad files in TIF, JPEG, etc. formats. Without having to right-click to choose a program other than the single default one, I'd like NEF files to launch Capture NX2, TIF and JPEG to launch Photoshop, etc. There aren't a lot of different file types, but 3 or 4 that I'd like to point at automatically — command-E style.
Thanks,
Mark

I'm not sure if I understand you correctly, but if you specify to use the "default" OS behaviour for opening a file, I think it does what you want already. At least for me this works; when I "open" (e.g., alt double click or CMD/CTRL-E) a NEF, I get Capture NX2, when I open a TIFF, I get Photoshop CS4, etc.

If for some reason this doesn't work for you and the files are opened in the wrong program, you can always specify which program should open what file type (have a look at the "Launching" tab of the preference pane).

Hope this helps,

Mark,

Without having to right-click to choose a program other than the single default one, I'd like NEF files to launch Capture NX2, TIF and JPEG to launch Photoshop, etc. There aren't a lot of different file types, but 3 or 4 that I'd like to point at automatically — command-E style.

Use the 'Set...' button that is next to the text "Assign specific editing applications for each file type:" on the Launching tab of the Photo Mechanic Preferences dialog.  You can assign a specific editor for each file type that PM supports.
