PM hanging and lagging

I recently purchased PM and sitting next to other photogs in the media room at NCAA bowl games I noticed how much quicker theirs ran. They were shocked at how slow mine was. Here are my specs
Mac Pro 2x2.8 Quad Core Intel Xeon
6 GB 800 MHz RAM
OSX 10.5.8

PM 4.6.2.1

It hangs big time when opening, sorting and especially closing. Any ideas?

On that machine PM should normally run pretty fast (I have a similar setup and PM is super fast) so there's likely something in your setup that's causing the slowness.

A couple of questions/things that could cause the slowness:

• Where are your images located, on a memory card, network folder, internal drive, ...
• what type of images are they, jpg, RAW, psd, ...
• If RAW, do you have the OS render RAW images (can be slow), or do you make use of the embedded preview (fast), you can specify this behaviour in the PM preferences by the way
• What else is running on your system
• ... Kirk probably has some more questions ...

The files are jpg and on the same HD as the PM is loaded.  I can run just PM and it hangs on opening and my system completely locks up when I try to shut down PM .  Thanks for any help.  Just so you know the same exact thing happens on my MacPro laptop.

What is your default sort method?  Filename is the fastest, followed by Modification Time, then much slower by Capture Time and any custom sort method.
How big is your Memory Cache?  How big is your Disk Cache?

Suggested settings for your desktop system would be:

Default sorting method: Filename (You can set this on the Contact Sheet tab of the Preferences dialog)
Disk cache size: 1024
Reserve at least: 100
Memory cache size: 768

If it is still slow with those settings, please let us know.
If you want suggested settings for your MacBookPro, then please post its specs as well.

Disk cache size: 1024
Reserve at least: 100
Memory cache size: 256 until you have more memory, then 768
