Lenstype label does not appear when saving as jpeg
« on: January 05, 2010, 05:56:24 PM »
Kirk,
I decided to use three labels in my contact sheet view, inclunding lenstype.
Now, when I use either "save as" or "extract jpeg previews" on my CR2 photos the resulting jpeg thumbnails will not present the label lenstype anymore.
I have a MacBook (10.6) and PM is 4.6.2.2.
Thanks in advance and a happy New Year.

I think that is to be expected.  The lens type information is stored inside the 'Maker Note' data in the RAW file.  The Maker Note is not put into the JPEG since it is specific to the RAW file it came from.
If maintaining that information is important to you, you could always preserve it by putting the {lenstype} variable in some unused IPTC field and apply the IPTC Stationery Pad during Save As.

Kirk,
Now, if I use Canon DPP to convert and save as jpeg, the resulting thumbnail will present the {lenstype} variable in the labels. Is that reasonable too?

Sure.  Canon knows how to write their own proprietary Maker Note data for the JPEGs they produce.

{lenstype] does not work with Canon 7D Mark II ??  I have started using the lenstype with my 7D for the last couple of events.  I get the correct lens for my Keywords.. But I just got the new Canon 7D Mark II and when I put in {lenstype} for the keyword, it brings back nothing.. {model} still works for both the 7D and 7D Mark II, but {lenstype} only works on the older 7D.. Any thoughts ?

It's entirely possible that PM is not yet able to decode that data on your images.  Are the lenses the same lenses you used on your original 7D?

Kirk:  thanks for the reply... BTW.. Love PM !!  Yes, its the same lens: Canon EF 70-200mm f2.8L

Wondering if it is because the 7DMII is so new?  LightRoom 5.x can't read the RAW files yet either....

Could you give us a sample image shot with that lens?

Hmm, for me the lens type comes through just fine. For the file you included, the variable {lt} (or {lenstype}, using the longer name) is returned as EF70-200mm f/2.8L USM.

What version of PM are you using?

Cheers,
Hayo

running version 5.0, build 15800 (e6ecc1c)

I am using {lenstype}

I do notice that a dialog box pops up for a quick second when I 'ingest', but it goes away so quick, I can't read it.

{lt} didn't work either

Hmm, are you saying that even on the jpg you posted it doesn't work?
That would be really strange as it sure does work for me...

Correct.  I wish i can see the pop up window that comes up when I 'ingest'

Its weird... when i use those same variables for my 7D, it works.. but when the 7DMii is used, lenstype does come up

TJ,

I wish i can see the pop up window that comes up when I 'ingest'

That dialog is the initial progress dialog for scanning your disk for files.  If you have more files, it will stay up longer, but I don't know why you'd want to see it for any length of time?

I didn't know what the msg was.  I thought it might have been something about why I am not seeing lenstype.
