Corrupted display of images dated in the past

I'm cataloging some images taken in the past that I have scanned.  I'm using PM to adjust the date using the adjust capture date tool.  In addition I have some images that I adjusted similarly in another program (Adobe Album).  The problem is the display of the date/time is corrupted in PM.  Is there a limit to how far in the past I can go?  I want to be able to sort and identify images by the date they were taken.  IPTC date doesn't seem to work reliably.

It sounds like the IPTC or EXIF data is not written according to specification.  I'd have to see a sample file to know for sure.
