PM Crops now missing from LR3?
« on: June 15, 2010, 01:05:18 AM »
Not sure why, but I was quite excited when I found that crops set in Photomechanic were imported into Lightroom 3..  until the last couple of weeks when I just noticed that they're no longer showing and LR crop is defaulted to the full image...

Have I messed a setting up, or has something changed with the "release" of LR3 or PM 4.6.4 ?

** EDIT : Ok, just realised it only transfers crop data with RAW files, not JPG...  ** :-*

PS - also getting the black background with black text problem when sending images by email, seen in other thread. ???

From the release notes of 4.6.4:

"To be consistent, Photo Mechanic no longer loads ACR crops in XMP for RAW files (it used to only load these if the crop angle was 0). Photo Mechanic now uses its own namespace for loading and saving crops in XMP."

I guess that means until PM gets crop rotation (which is an often requested feature), the crop settings won't transfer to Adobe products now. Okay by me.

That's correct.

I discovered it does still work - but only when editing RAW files with crops set in PM into Lightroom..  if I crop a JPG and then 'edit in Lightroom' - the crops don't transfer across, but they do in the .CR2 files, and I like that..  :)

OK, so I guess I just missed this thread altogether.  I am one of the minority that used the PM crop passed to Lightroom in order to speed up my work flow.  I can blow through a folder of hundreds of images in PM setting a crop and the pass the RAW files through Lightroom which in turn, can write out the full res JPG reflecting the crop.

I know that there was a lot of discussion on rotating the crop in PM, but I would never use that in my workflow.

Is there anything that can be done to put the ACR crop info into XMP as an option we can turn on until a broader solution is found that satisfies everyone?

Thanks!

I think Kirk stated that when make crop rotateable in PM (which is AFAIK from the forum statements, in the works), they will reinstate the option of passing the crop to LR/ACR. When will that be, only the developers know :) But I am confident they are working on it, along with the catalogue. Before that, any option that would pass the non-rotateable crop into LR/ACR would create a mess as it did the last time, as it would be inconsistent if you even accidentaly rotated the crop inside ACR/LR a bit. Creating more problems than solving them, and I can imagine again the flow of forum posts about "why is the crop different/missing/...". I guess we will have to wait. And you were not in the minority, it was a very good feature, one I am looking forward to using when it's mature.

Just leaving this as an update for those that follow this thread in the future...

I found an old version of 4.6.3 for Windows.  It still writes the crop into the XMP for Adobe.  These are youth Team and Individual photos.  Not worried about long-term compatibility with these images.  This will work as a crutch for the time being as long as I do my code replacement first with 4.6.6 (beta for now).
