Keyword hierarchies in RAW + JPG
« on: July 31, 2010, 05:49:22 PM »
Just started experimenting with RAW + JPG in the last week, and noticed a problem yesterday after importing my PM-keyworded photos into Lightroom 3.  It's my old favorite, spaces in the keyword hierarchies not being ignored by LR on import, so a duplicate keyword hierarchy gets created - this is effecting only the JPGs, RAWs are fine.  So, in addition to "Animal" as a top-level keyword, I'm also getting "Animal ", and since "Primate" is in the middle of a hierarchy, it comes in as " Primate " (with leading and trailing spaces).  The final keyword in a hierarchy is imported with only the leading space.

I've decided to stop shooting RAW + JPG (for other reasons), but wanted to bring this up in case it effects other users.

It's probably because your JPEG has IPTC and XMP data and IPTC data does not have a hierarchical keywords field and thus PM must put the hierarchical keywords into the IPTC Keywords field with the separators.  There really is no alternative for IPTC data, though you can instruct PM to only put XMP data into your JPEGs, which would solve the problem.

Kirk - thanks.  Where is the setting to only put XMP data into the JPEGs?  Any downside to that?  Like I said, I'm no longer shooting RAW + JPG, but it would be nice to know how to handle it in the future if I need to do it for some reason.

In the When writing IPTC/XMP section, there is a popup menu preceded by the text "For JPEG, TIFF, PSD, DNG photos:" with the following selections:

Add embedded IPTC
Add embedded IPTC4XMP
Add both embedded IPTC and IPTC4XMP

Choose 'Add embedded IPTC4XMP'
