sorting by capture time not working
« on: August 03, 2010, 09:48:47 AM »
hi gang
am running 4.5.4 on macbook pro os 10.4.11
have previously had success sorting by capture time but not this time....
Here's the order of my operations:
an event was shot.  about 200 faves were selected from 2 different cameras. put all the images in single folder. THEN I adjusted the capture time from 'b camera'....then tried to sort
by capture time, but the contact sheet is still showing them according to file name...

did I do something wrong or is it a little glich?

cheers

stephen

If you show the capture time of the images as one of your labels under the thumbnails, do they appear to be correct?

I'm not sure I understand "capture time...as one of your labels under the thmbs.."
if I double-click the thumb to get larger image with info the capture time is correct......but that isn't what you mean is it?

No.  Open up the Photo Mechanic Preferences dialog.  Click on the Contact Sheet tab.  Find the 'Thumbnails' section.  On the right hand side you can customize the up to three lines of additional thumbnail labels.  Change the 'Labels' popup menu to read 'Filename + one label'.  In the Label 1 text field enter:

{time}

Then OK the Preferences dialog.  The thumbnails will now show their Capture Times.  Do they appear to be in sorted order?  If not, then please post a screen shot of the entire contact sheet window showing the toolbar as well.

Kirk, meant to thank you, but have been swamped.
What you suggested worked beautifully...
but now, interestingly (or not) each image I modify adopts the modification time....
and sorts it according to this time.
I'm sure i can sort it out but if you have any quick feedback, it'd be appreciated
cheers

what it's doing is -more specifically- after I modify a select and convert to a jpg for my 'hero' folder, the DNG REVERTS to the original time.  In this case I F'd up and originally had set the time in camera to AM instead of PM.  this was corrected.  but now the select DNG neg is reverting to 3am, instead of 3pm.....
does this make sense?

What application is modifying the DNG file?

PM does update the modification date of files that you edit with Photo Mechanic.  This is by design.

I take the select files into Photoshop (cs3)...
the funny thing is that the dng 'reappears' in the contact sheet with the original <wrong> capture time....and not the capture time I adjusted.

Photoshop ignores the actual EXIF capture time and only uses the capture time in the XMP data (when present).  Photo Mechanic versions prior to 4.6.x don't update the capture time in the XMP data.  Current versions do update both the actual EXIF capture time and the duplicate (and in our opinion, completely unnecessary) capture time in the XMP data.

No.  PM 4.6.5 runs on 10.4.11, 10.5.8, and 10.6.4 Mac OS X systems.
