Hello.  I am running the latest version of Photo Mechanic (4.4.3.2) on a Windows XP SP2 desktop.  As part of an assignment, I took approximately 400 .NEF shots on a Nikon D70 for a church photo directory.  I used PM to narrow the shots down to 110 keepers, and then applied a soft crop to each of the 110.

The next step was going to be to applying the custom crop and save them as JPEGs at an appropriate resolution.  However, when I do <file> <save as> I get an error message “none of the selected files can be saved at high resolution.”  This seems odd, given that I can send them to myself via email and both the crop and the JPEG conversion works as expected.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks!

Michael

The send photos as email command uses the JPEG preview contained in the NEF files to create the JPEGs that are sent via email.  We do not "render" NEF files on the Windows version since we do not have a RAW converter and the OS itself does not offer one.  If you want, you can use the "Extract JPEG Previews from RAW Photos" command to get the JPEGs out of your RAW files.

Windows Vista promises to provide a RAW converter and we will take advantage of it once Vista has been released and is stable enough for daily use.

HTH,

Kirk,

>We do not "render" NEF files on the Windows version<

Can this be done in the Mac version?

Cheers,

Yes, as long as you have Mac OS X 10.4.6 and higher, and Photo Mechanic 4.4.3 and higher, you can Save As on supported RAW formats.  There are no "adjustments" so the "as shot" settings are used.  The results are pretty good for the most part.

Yes, up through the D200.  Future OS revisions will support newer cameras.

I had been getting the "None of the selected photos can be saved at high resolution" error message with the D300 raw files, and when we spoke on the phone, Kirk, you mentioned that Mac OS Tiger doesn't support the D300. Understood- I'd have to jump to Leopard to have D300 support on the Mac.

Well, I'm now getting the same message with D200 files. I have upgraded my version of Tiger to 10.4.11 and now I'm unable to process RAW files from my D200 either.

Help...!

Can the Preview application on your system render the D200 files?

If it can't then neither will Photo Mechanic.

Do you have RAW rendering enabled in the RAW tab of the Preferences dialog?
