Using only a part of the caption

It often happens to me that I want to skip the last x characters from my caption when I send it to a customer. My logic would say to use {capt: 0,-x} but unfortunately this does not work neither when manually editing the caption of a photo nor using IPTC stationery.

Is there any solution for my problem or am I only doing something the wrong way?

Unfortunately you cannot use a variable inside its own field.  I don't know of a way to trim off the caption directly, but you could copy the shortened version to another field and then copy it back from the other field to the caption field.
