Please make PM read PDFs.
« on: February 25, 2011, 07:47:28 PM »
Why can't PM see PDFs? I'd really like to use PM as my finder like in OS X.
You know what I'm talking about.
So I open PM to see some files I saved from emails or what not, and damn, I forget or didn't know that the files were PDF's. Then I'm back out to the finder.
I'm sure there is a perfectly good reason, it's just a pain sometimes.
Thanks.

Allowing PDFs (and any other document format) to be viewed by PM would indeed be a welcome thing, but is probably not straight forward to do.

Perhaps on the Mac platform, PM could make use of the quickview ability of the OS? This way we instantly gain the ability to view many sorts of documents right within PM.

Kirk, do you think this is feasible?

I think these old posts explain some of the problems attached to doing this :

I've read the old posts on this, and I understand the problem, particularly as it pertains to Windows and licensing of some tool to render PDFs...

Nonetheless, I've been receiving image files lately that are in PDF format.   These typically are documents that are image heavy, but also have text.  Often photogs will have PDF brochures, for example.   The previews show up fine in Finder.  No surprise there.  But I'd love to be able to see a thumbnail on PM's contact sheet.    I'd want to rename and rate them.  Perhaps rating and tagging the files could be handled solely by sidecar files.

Not a high priority, but I'm throwing it out there.

This is an interesting concept, but are you not really looking for a full-up Digital Asset Management (DAM) system? That's quite a different focus than what I understand the current purpose of Photo Mechanic to be (Now maybe, when the "cataloging" functionality is implemented, that might change).

For now, perhaps you might have a look at "Daminion" (http://daminion.net/). I believe there is a free edition for less than a certain number of files and beyond that the price is modest. From what I saw, it would handle the files you want to manage.
