Capture NX2.3 64 bit and Color class setting in PM does not open jpg

Hallo,

since 12/20/2011 a 64 bit Version of Nikon Capture NX2.3 is available.
I just found out, that if I set a Color Class Parameter on a jpg, it will not open with the new NX2 version in 64 bit mode. I get an error message which says, translated from german "... invalid color format, this file format is not supported".
NEF files work fine, and also 32 bit mode works ok.
I run PM 4.6.8 and OS X 10.6.8

Any thoughts on this? Does somebody else realized this?
What could be done? I reported this also to Nikon.

Well for some reason Capture NX 2.3 64 bit version doesn't like the end-of-file preferences that PM writes (and has written for several years now).  If you select a photo, then go into the Tools menu, Delete Metadata... command, then check (only) the box "Photo Mechanic end of file preferences" then Capture NX2.3 will open the file.  But I would recommend you use the 32-bit mode until Nikon fixes their bug since this seems to function properly.

I will also contact Nik to see if they can address this for the next update.

I am sure something else is going on here; my NX2 copy running 64 bit on Lion 10.7.2 is doing fine. No problem whatsoever.

Do you have the problem with all files or just with some? Can you post a sample file so I can see if I can reproduce your problem?

Edit: ah I see you were working with jpgs, I never do that but when I tried I too get the same error. Nikon has a bug on their hands :-(

I am very glad that finally somebody understood my problem.
The solution you are recommending (deleting the metadata) is working.
I will also contact Nikon Support Germany.

By the way, I got jpgs from another source, Sony A330, they are showing the same problem.

Thank you for your advice. I had the same issues re: Jpegs not being read in NX2.
Deleting the "end of file preferences" is an effective workaround.
I would hope Nikon can correct this issue in future versions of Capture NX.
Thank goodness Camera Bits provides superior customer service.

I'm using the 32 bit version of NX2 and I have this problem. I've also previously notified Nikon that rotating jpegs in PhotoMechanic renders the file unreadable by NX2 where it never used to.

The Nikon Capture 2.3.1 update this week did not fix this problem. But for me it is only 64 bit.  The same jpegs that give this problem in Capture will also not open full screen in the new ViewNX 2.3.0 update in 64 bit but will show full screen in 32 bit (will show thumbnails in either 32 or 64).

Deleting the end of file preferences helps the NX2 jpgs rotated by PM problem too.

Some info for Kirk: OS 10.6.8 - NX2 2.3.0 - PM 4.6.8 and I'm in 32 bit mode. I have both the colour class and rotation problem with jpgs.

No problems should occur from removing the data from the end of the file.

There is no way to have PM embed XMP and not also add end of file preferences at this time.

I wrote to Nikon concerning this issue.
They wrote back saying that their software may not be compatible with third party software. They instructed me to contact Camera Bits and ask them to make Photo Mechanic compatible with Capture NX2.

We'll probably stop writing end of file preferences in version 5 (or at least make it an option) but I think that it's odd for them to ask us to fix our software when it's their new software that has a problem and all of their previous versions had no such issues...

Fingers crossed they may yet fix it. The response I received was marginally more helpful but they have also reintroduced a number of previously fixed bugs with 2.3.0 and may have their hands full. I'll upgrade to 2.3.1 in a few days when I can afford to take the risk.

We've been writing EOF prefs for more than ten years now and not many apps have had an issue with them so far.

Hm, just read about the problem opening JPG's in NX2 64-bit after setting color class in PM.

I just tried several JPE's and they open just fine in NX2 64-bit. Dito with ViewNX2 64-bit.
