Drag to copy (not move)
« on: July 04, 2012, 01:16:31 PM »
Hi,

I am running Photo Mechanic version 4.6.8 and I run Mac OS X 10.7.4

I am trying to find out how you can drag to copy files and not MOVE them. Im sure this involves holding down a key while you drag
but I have tried ctrl, alt and command (separately!)

I have also looked through the "Copying/Moving Photos" section of the manual which states:
You can also use drag and drop to copy or move photos by dragging a selection of
photos to the Favorites or Navigator, or even another application like the Finder

How do you tell PM to move or copy when you drag?

Please include windows instructions too.
Thanks
-Tommy

Tommy,

Use the Option key.  It's between the Control and Command keys.

On Windows, Shift is used instead.

As I observed it is OS default to move files if you drag them on the same drive and copy if the target is on a different drive. You can change it with the modifiers Kirk said.
Working on Mac, OSX, iOS and with some Canons.
Allways shooting RAW.

What key would I use to move the files to a target drive instead of it copying the files?

Hi!

The same modifier key(s). They toggle the behavior.

Local to Local without modifier will move, with modifier will copy.
Local to different drive and vice versa: without modifier will copy, with modifier will move

Can you please try the same within the finder?
I assume you have tried this in PM so far?

OK, i gave it a try on my end, too...

I the finder itself you have to use the Command-Key as the modifier to toggle the behavior.
It seems that this is a "bug" in PM right now. That's a thing for Kirk to answer.

If you "just" want to move files, you can use the Copy/Move function in PM.
Select the files in the contact sheet, press "Command-Y" and mark the tick-box "move photos" in the upcoming dialog.
Select the target folder and click "Move".

Sorry, I cannot help.

I have been using the move option but thought that if I could just use a key it would be easier
but thanks for your help
