In my case the .mov files will fail to render the first time a contact sheet is opened after a restart. If I close the contact sheet and reopen it the files will then render correctly. I don't have any extra codecs installed on my system.

Kirk,

Yes, that's it.  I am also going to upload another file exported with Compressor and the standard Apple Quicktime settings.  Same deal, no rendered thumbnail.

I installed the X.264 codec component, downloaded your two additional movies and I still have no issues rendering thumbnails or playing back the movies themselves in the Preview window.

I'm not sure where to go from here.  Maybe it is a Mac OS X 10.7.x issue.  I live, develop, and test on Mac OS X 10.6.8.  I'll see if one of our QA guys can reproduce this issue on Mac OS X (Lion).

All our computers are running Lion, so I have no way of testing this on 10.6.  Thanks for keeping at it.

Kirk,

I have a virtual OS X 10.7.4 running as a test environment.
If needed, I can assist in testing

Peter,

If it's alright with you, I'll get the sample movies to Sven for further testing.

Thanks,

-Kirk

Kirk, Peter!

I received the 3 videos now.
I installed PM in a virtual instance of OS X 10.7.4, latest updates and the codec listed earlier installed.
PM was installes after the codec. PM was not configured. All is default.
All videos are running at the first time.
Virtual machine is a single CPU and 2GB of RAM

I copied them also to my main Mac (same OS) but a _bit_ more memory without the codec installed.
All are also running without extra icons.

PM.log shows really nothing.

Thanks for looking into this.

So, the suggestion is that this issue is unique to my machine? Puzzling. I am running all the Adobe CS6 video applications, Final Cut X, Motion, Compressor, etc, as well as the usual assortment of still image software and have no issues.  The same clips show up as thumbs in everything else, including Aperture 3, Lightroom 4 and even Capture One 6.

At this point it is looking like an issue unique to your system, but that doesn't mean I don't want to solve it.  It just gets tougher to solve.

Are you willing to do some sleuthing?  Do you know how to enter command line directives?

From Peter in a private message:

Thanks to Kirk for his help.

He found that at some point I had installed an audio application called JackOSX and deleted it. (I don't remember when or why...) It left something on the machine, though.  I installed the newest version of JackOSX, ran the uninstall script that comes with the installation and PM 5 Beta renders the thumbnails of all flavors of video clips now, with no extra dock icons.
Thanks again Kirk.

Peter

Do we know what the leftover preference/file which was causing the extra bouncing icons? I have been dealing with this for awhile and it seems isolated to just one of my machines. I'd love to find the root cause of the extra bouncing icons when PM deals with video files. I am running latest OS El Capitan and Photo Mechanic Version 5.0, build 17338 (df27633)

Do you have JackOSX installed?  It was the cause of the other person's problem.

If not, then there may be some other application causing this to happen on your system.
