Contact Sheet or Ingest from Galaxy Nexus Phone (Android)
« on: July 06, 2012, 11:50:58 AM »
Hi,

since I shoot pictures with my phone every now and then I've always used PMto import them to my computer. Being a new owner of the Galaxy Nexus (Android Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.4) this does not work anymore.

Before Android phones were simple USB Mass Storages (UMS) to the computer (Windows 7 x64). With this new android version google changed this. Now I can choose the usb setting between MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) and PTP (Picture Transfer Protocol). In neither setting PM recognizes the phone. It is not shown in the navigator. Using CRTL-O I can navigate to the relevant folder but PM won't open it.

Is there a solution or will I have to live with the fact that the phone is now real camera ;-)

Oliver

Hi Oliver!

What about using "Ingest Folder"? Can you open the folder in the Ingest dialog?

Thanks for this lightning fast reply, Sven.

No matter which setting I use, MTP or PTP, I can navigate to the folder in the "Choose Inget Source Folder" menu but clicking OK won't add it to the source paths in the ingest dialog.

Let me guess: The "Phone :)" has no drive letter assigned? It appears somewhere in a system folder?

Oliver ,

I think it would not be possible to the way you have done it before.
Workaround: When can access the phone via the Explorer sou can copy the images over to a temporary folder and ingest from there into PM...

I think there are some other forums dealing with the android's "features" and may be have a solution on how to get UMS back...
If it is really impossible, return the "smart"phone and get a normal phone and a "point and shoot" cam :)

Your workaround seems to be the only solution right now. Thanks!!

That's an idea but the phone has grown into an essential tool of my professional work. Not the phone camera although I had some of my phonecamera pictures published ;-) It just comes in handy from time to time since I have not yet found the appropriate point and shoot to carry around.

What about the Leica M9? Small and good quality :)

M9 - good idea. They are manufactured not too far from where I live. Maybe I manage to get a hold on a M9 Titan  ;)

In case this is helpful, with my Android phone (htc EVO 4g) I have shifted over the using the automatic upload feature of Dropbox. The way it works is, every photo is more or less instantly uploaded by Dropbox to my "Camera Uploads" folder. Then I created an Ingest script is PM to fetch images from that folder.

What I like is that the images are "just there" waiting to be ingested.

Free and very convenient.

See https://www.dropbox.com/help/287/en for some detail.

That's a good dea. I've been using dropbox on my phone for quite a while but have not tried the photoupload. Even when using WiFi it will take a while to upload but I'll give it a try. Thanks!
