Edit in PS not working
« on: August 10, 2012, 07:13:28 PM »
I have set the editor in Preferences to PS. When I select .nefs in preview and click "edit photos" in the Image tab, I get a "Couldn't start editor application" error. If I select an image or images in Preview and right click I can select either Edit photo(s) or Edit photos with ... and PS starts up and works.

PM 5
Win 7

Thanks,

Sam

You have likely assigned a specific editor to your NEF files and it doesn't exist on your machine anymore.  In the Preferences dialog open the Launching section.  Look for the text "Assign specific editing applications for each file type:". Click on the 'Set...' button.  Scroll to the NEF item.  Either choose a new application, or click on the 'Use default' button.

That should take care of the issue.

Actually, application assigned to specific file types (like NEF's) did not copy from v4.6 into v5 during intallation and I had to manually assign them again in v5. That's on a Win7 X64 machine.

I have tried it both ways in preferences..... "use default" and set it to use "photoshop.exe" in the preferences...  launching.... then "assign specific editing apps for file types", but still no joy.

Other than this, I love it............ still trying to get use to the new look.

Thanks again,
Sam

Can you post screenshots of the following: Launching prefs,  the File type to application mapping dialog (showing the NEF entry), and the error message box that comes up when you try to edit?  Use the 'Attachments and other options' link when you're composing your reply to this message and there you'll be able to upload your JPEG format screenshots.

Thanks,

-Kirk

Sam,

Thanks.  Can you also exercise one of the edit methods that does work for you with out error?  I think it was one of the contextual menu methods.  Then send me the PM.log again.

Also, can you take a screen shot of the Properties of your Photoshop.exe from within Windows Explorer?  Please post that here too.

Thanks,

-Kirk

Sam,

Thanks.  I needed to see the code path that the two other commands used.

I see in the logs that your path to Photoshop is:

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS3\Photoshop.exe

But in your screen shot, your Photoshop application doesn't end in .exe so either your Windows Explorer is set to hide extensions for particular file types or something odd is going on.  Please investigate.

Thanks,

-Kirk

I'll check into it when I get a chance.............

If I find a problem and get it fixed, do I just delete the .exe file you sent me? I just renamed the original, so I can delete the one you sent, and put the original back.

I'll let you know.

Thanks again,

Sam

Yes, that would work fine.  I also have a newer logging version which should tell me why CreateProcess() is failing to launch your Photoshop application.  If you find that there is no issue with your Photoshop executable then we should have you run the latest logging version and get the results from the PM.log file.

Thanks,

I checked again.....  On the properties window, it says "type of file" Application (.exe)
Yes, I guess Win hides the file extensions.

??????

Then I'll need for you to run another logging version.

I'll get you the details in an hour or so.
