Click to select / tag
« on: September 24, 2012, 04:57:06 AM »
I'm worried that this exists and I haven't found it, although I have looked. I would like to be able to tag a picture just by clicking on it at the contact view. I know that I can put a tick in the box, but that is fiddly and trying to hit the box takes the eye away from the pictures, I'm selecting about half the pictures from a folder of 3000 files.

At the moment I'm having to keep the command key down and then hit command+ every so often- not ideal because I often hit command T and lose them! (Although I try to keep a camera card of the T button to stop me!)

Thank you,

Peter

If you have only one item selected in your contact sheet, you can simple press 'T' without any other modifier keys and it will toggle the tag.

Thank you Kirk,
I knew I could do that, it is still time consuming though. I want to be able to tag the picture just be clicking on it, instead of clicking the box.

Why use the mouse at all?  Select one photo.  Use the arrow keys to move to the next interesting photo and press the T key.  Repeat step 2 until you've tagged all of the interesting photos.

It is unlikely we will ever add a feature that would cause the Tag to toggle just because you clicked on a thumbnail.  How would one make a selection of photos?  Especially a discontinuous selection of photos?

Thanks Kirk. I take your point about the arrow keys, but in a folder of 3000 images I would be pressing the forward arrow 3000 times.

I'm not really talking about selecting pictures, just tagging them. (And then 'select tagged' afterwards). Why can't you have a preference for 'click thumbnail to tag' instead of 'click thumbnail to select'? I don't understand why that should be unlikely.

A simple way to do what you want would be to go through the contact sheet and click to select the images you want tagged.  Then, use Ctrl +  (on a Windows machine) to tag all the selected images.  This only adds the Ctrl + command to what you want to do.

Thanks Woodie- that's what I was doing and it was painful, for reasons explained. In fact I have achieved what I wanted to do by configuring the eraser on my Wacom tablet to produce the keystroke 'command+'

I'd still like it as a preference though!

Maybe I didn't explain it right or not understand what you want to do. My understanding is that you want to click on an image in the contact sheet and tag it rather than select it. If you have 3000 images but only want 100 tagged, that's 100 clicks not 3000.  If that's correct, you can select multiple images by Ctrl-clicking (Windows) each image, that's just one click per selected image or 100 Ctrl-clicks to select 100 images.  Then with 100 images selected, Ctrl-+ and the 100 images selected will all be tagged. The only thing this adds to your request, as I understand it, is the Ctrl-+ to tag the selected images.

I can imagine certain uses it could be helpful but I never missed such a feature from PM and probably will never miss (or use if it ever gets implemented) just like I never use the zoom cursor feature on the Contact Sheet.
However it could be a Tag Cursor mode in the doolbar of the Contact Sheet next to the current Select Cursor and Zoom Cursor. It could be activated or deactivated by clicking one of the symbols in the toolbar or with the Z toggle key.
Working on Mac, OSX, iOS and with some Canons.
Allways shooting RAW.
