PM gets slower from version to version
« on: February 04, 2013, 01:42:14 PM »
Hi,

what I have to state is, that the last two versions of PM are getting slow. Im working here on a iMac late 2009 i5 with 16GB RAM and on the latest version for example the saving of tif-files to jpeg is painfully slow now, it was lsow with the last version, but now it is really painful.

Really?  Is this just a hunch or have you done some timing tests?

None of the Tiff load or save code has changed since the first release version of PM5.  The same goes for the JPEG code.

Hi Kirk,

I didn't do any testing yet, I just have more time lags when displaying images in full size, there is an impression of slowness when processing files, I do see the spinning wheel more often, ... but - as you mentioned, nothing verified by testing.
I'll have a look on it during the next days ...

Is it possible that the environment in which you run Photo Mechanic has changed over the last few months?  Running more apps uses more RAM, if there isn't enough RAM available then the OS will resort to using Virtual Memory and will page portions of memory onto and off of your hard drive.  Virtual Memory is several orders of magnitude slower than RAM access and will dramatically slow down Photo Mechanic.

Yep, put the RAM to the maximum of 16GB ... I will have an eye on my highly valued PM ...

On my MBPro using Mountain Lion, I've been having problems with folders of photos taking 45 seconds to open but discovered that PM5 is NOT the problem. After looking on the Apple forums, I discovered that resetting the NVRAM and PRAM will solve the problem. After a reset, the folders open almost instantly now. There's a step-by-step on an Apple site showing how to do this.

Mike,
I would be interested in knowing how to reset the NVRAM and PRAM.  Could you please give some more details on how to do it?
TIA

I see.  I was looking more for the discussion that showed that resetting would solve speed issues on Mountain Lion.

But knowing how to do it is certainly helpful.

Thanks,

Hi Kirk, I don't know if this will help but some time ago I was having slowness problems of the same nature when using Lion but when I switched to Mountain Lion, the problems disappeared for a time. I suppose the NVRAM and PRAM were reset when the OS changed. Recently, I started having the same problems with the new OS (Mountain Lion) and kept looking at the PM forums thinking someone else must be having these issues as well. Finally, I simply Googled the problem and found other Mountain Lion users having slowness issues. That's how I came upon the NVRAM and PRAM fix. Time will tell how long this fix will last but so far so good.

I have read a long time ago that after a firmware update a PRAM and NVRAM reset is recommended.
