Changing keyboard shortcuts in IPTC Dialog Window
« on: February 22, 2013, 02:11:05 AM »
In Version 5 Build 13764 on OS X, is it still possible to edit the application package contents as it was before?

Last night I downloaded 13764, installed it, and tried to change the keyboard shortcuts used in IPTC Dialog Window for "Save -> Next" and "Save <- Previous". Unfortunately the system reported that the application was broken and suggested that I should move it to the trash (sic!).

I am using a non-English keyboard, and the layout is different. Therefore I want to change from "]" to "." and from "[" to ",". The thing is, that I have always been able to make this adjustment in earlier versions without any hassles, so something must have changed in this latest Build, right?

P.S. On my Mac I'm using "TextWrangler" from Barebones to edit text files, because it is non-destructive. On Windows I recommend "Notepad++".

This is how I used to accomplish this before, unfortunately it didn't work in the latest Build:

ON MAC OS X:

Right click on:
"/Applications/Photo Mechanics.app" and choose "Show package content".

Navigate to the file:
"/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/IPTCInfoDialog.nib" that can be edited as a text file in TextWrangler.

Search for the string:
"<string>Save & →</string>"
Replace the character on the row immediatelly below (which originally is "]") for instance with "."

Also search for the string:
"<string>Save & ←</string>"
Replace the character on the row immediatelly below (which originally is "[") for instance with ","

Save, close TextWrangler and open Photo Mechanic.
The shortcut "Cmd ." in the IPTC Dialog Window will save any changes made and move on the next picture.
The shortcut "Cmd ," in the IPTC Dialog Window will save any changes made and move to the previous picture.

is it still possible to accomplish with the latest Build?

Hi!

Works well for me, but why aren't you using the Command-N and Command-B keys instead?
That's more easy and works without touching anything.

After 5 years of absence I restarted the photography.

No. The application is now code signed with a digital certificate provided by Apple. This is because of the need to conform to verification by Apple's Gate Keeper technology in Mac OS X 10.8.

But please use the other keys that appear when you hover your mouse over the various buttons. We added alternates that should work for most users quite a while ago.

Thanks for the advice, guys.

I actually was not aware of the "new" shortcut keys for navigating in the IPTC Dialog window.
But now I appreciate it even more. 8)

P.S. Question from a curious: when was these new shortcuts introduced?
And can I find an up-to-date summary of all the shortcuts somewhere?

Quite a while ago.

Yes. Just hover your mouse pointer over the buttons and tooltips will appear and show you what the shortcuts are.

We are in the process of creating an entirely new set of documentation for PM 5.
